Quantitative and Qualitative Face Fit Testing
North Durham Safety LTD carry out Quantitative and Qualitative Face Fit Testing in accordance with HSE INDG 479.
Why Fit Test?
- Poor fitting RPE is less obvious but just as serious a health risk
- We must confirm by fit testing that the user of respiratory protective equipment (RPE) have an adequate seal for every type they use
- Face fit testing is a UK HSE requirement, required under COSHH, CLAW and CAW regulations
- Typically 98% of fit tested workers exceeded the minimum protection level compared to only 55% of non-fit tested workers!

What is the difference?
Quantitative Face Fit Testing
Using a particle counting machine – TSI Portacount 8048 – this is suitable for Full and Half face mask respirators including Disposables with the correct model/attachments (N95 Companion) gives a numerical measure of the fit (Quantity). This is a more stringent pass/fail test demonstrating the level of performance of the RPE with a measurable result for a specific mask on an individual.
Benefits are;
- All types of tight fitting RPE can be tested including Full Face
- Can test anyone including those with poor sense of taste
- Gives an accurate, objectively measured and detailed – recorded result which can be stored or printed
It should also be noted this test destroys disposable masks due to the need to puncture the mask to insert the tube
Qualitative Face Fit Testing
Is less accurate, uses a sprayed solution of either a bitter tasting substance or a sweet substance to test for leaks on the face seal whilst the wearer undertakes 7 exercises within a hood. If after the exercises the candidate has not tasted the solution, this is classed as satisfactory as a pass and a fit factor of 100 is assigned. This is only suitable for disposable and half masks and cannot be used for full face tight fitting respiratory protective equipment. The test is also subjective.
Qualitative Prices
- Per mask tested and individual = £30.00 plus VAT at our premises in Consett, County Durham.
- Half day (4 hours) – up to 10 tests = £270 plus VAT within 20 miles* of our premises.
- Full day (8 hours) – up to 20 tests = £450 plus VAT within 20 miles* of our premises.
* Mileage allowance is payable where the travel distance is greater than 20 miles
Quantitative Face Fit Testing Prices
- Per mask tested and individual = £35.00 plus VAT at our premises in Consett, County Durham.
- Half day (4 hours) – up to 10 tests = £316 plus VAT within 20 miles* of our premises.
- Full day (8 hours) – up to 20 tests = £525 plus VAT within 20 miles* of our premises.
* Mileage allowance is payable where the travel distance is greater than 20 miles
